New Discovery: Plants sound when they’re stressed
An interesting article from The Age titled “This is what a plant sounds like when it’s stressed.”
The assumption that the plant kingdom is silent is challenged because the researcher found that plants make a lot of noise when they’re stressed.
The research adopted a scientific approach to recording the clicking sound of tomato and tobacco plants when they’re dehydrated or being cut.
The sound can be heard here.
With the help of machine learning, researchers can further differentiate between dry, cut, and healthy plants.
This might help farmers set up listening sensors to gauge whether their crops are healthy or need extra attention, and look after them more efficiently, such as precision irrigation under the pressure of intensifying droughts due to climate change.
More interestingly, as moths can hear the high pitch of the tomato sound before laying larvae on tomato plants, they might be able to listen in to decipher which particular plant could give their young the best odds of survival.
The era of precision irrigation might be arriving soon. And the era of new opportunities for sustainable businesses can be expected.
